Emory University Department of Emergency Medicine has one of the nation’s best training programs in Emergency Medicine. Highly regarded worldwide this department teaches medical students both at Emory and from abroad. This department also supports one of the largest Emergency Medical residency programs. Using state of the art technology, improved teaching techniques, actors, and robots this school creates the leading edge in this field. There are three segments of the department of EM, education, research and service. Our project is focused on improving the research grant process which Physicians and students use to request money from entities to conduct research. Every year millions of dollars are awarded to Emory for research projects and in 2009 Emory received half of all the NIH ARRA grants awarded to Georgia academic institutions. Therefore, research receives a bulk of its funding from a multitude of sources from federal, state, commercial and private. In creating successful research initiatives each request must go through a process to determine all costs both financially and from a usage of resources perspective. Projects of good value are then processed by underwriters that cover finances of the whole university.
Since grant funding is what is used to pay for these research projects it is vitally important that before submission all known information is available, accessible, up to date, and the research makes good economic sense. Resources are evaluated to determine availability and cost and an inspection to ensure research adheres to grant requirements. There is a certain amount of protected time in which the business department can evaluate the grant and research proposals. However information about this process is not known or very well understood by faculty and students. Improving this process and educating those who seeks grants on how it works and how to speed it up is what we have set out to accomplish.
